My email or mail stopped working. What should I do?

Make sure your mail records are grey-clouded on Cloudflare!

If your email is not working, you are missing mail and MX records in your zone file or your mail records are not properly configured. As soon as you add these records, your email will start working.  To edit your DNS zone file on Cloudflare:

  1. Log into your Cloudflare Account.
  2. Click on the domain you wish to add an MX record for.
  3. Click the "DNS" link at the top of the page.

Many hosting companies will use the domain name for MX records and resolve the mail server internally. When using Cloudflare, the MX record cannot be the domain itself, which passes through Cloudflare.

A typical configuration to get around this:  MX record is a subdomain with a grey cloud.

mail              CNAME  domain.com           (grey cloud)

domain.com MX         mail.domain.com

If your email doesn't work shortly after adding or editing any required MX records, it is quite likely the issue is with your mail server and you should contact your mail provider for further assistance. You should also confirm with your mail provider what the mail and MX values should be.
